Six Strange People

They say about the IITs, "The hardest part was getting in. You had to be a genius not to graduate."
The July of 2004, as rains lashed the sleepy obscure town of Kharagpur, six guys found themselves struggling to settle themselves in the quagmire called IIT, Kharagpur.
They, who were stepping out of their teens and yet puerility ruled their spirit;They, who had stars in their eyes yet mirth held their heart; They, who had the sincerity of ambition yet raillery entranced their lips; They, their thoughts piebald and their demeanor standing out, were in for a time that infuses life with romance, that inpregnates memories with nostalgia, that makes men yearn for the years by-gone.

:

Of Manners gentle, of Affections mild;
In Wit a Man: Simplicity, a child.
- Alexander Pope
He was proud Mumma's nice boy with intelligence unparalleled and a conduct, most virtuous.
All girls were his 'Didi's and all guys were 'Dada' s and 'Bhaiya' s , he didn't understand profanity and all references to incest and intercourse were censored by his discerning ears. You referred to the fellow's privates and he believed you were only conversing about his intelligence.
Smoke and booze were anathema, flirting with girls was blasphemy, to procrastinate was to dine with the swine and to let Himanshu tug at his towel was prostitution.
He scored a top 500 rank at IIT-JEE, 2004, chucked all other traits of engineering only to zero in on Biotechnology and he worked hard to prove himself.

Circa 2009:

The man who consecrates his hours
By vig'rous effort and an honest aim,
At once he draws the sting of life and death;
He walks with nature and her paths are peace.

Deb bent his back and shut the daylights out of his department mates. Scored heavily on the GRE and is set to join ranks with the learned and distinguished of the world.
With his profanity, he has imperiled the chastity of all mothers and sisters of the world. He labels the human anatomy( male and female and even animals, all inclusive) with the flair of a virtuoso, has tasted several shots of free tequila, clicks the chicks in train bogies and flirts with girls and women with aplomb and suavity. All these years, he has had Himanshu for his neighbor and well, that has tested his nerves and has steeled his sense of humor against the most maladroit repartees and the mostly ghastly 'PJ's. ('PJ', in popular colloquialism, stands for a really really trash joke but Himanshu has made the 'PJ' his very own and soon 'PJ's would be rechristened as 'HJ's
(Himanshian Junk).
Deb is a transformed individual now, ready to lock horns with the Prerits and Himanshus of this world.

HIMANSHU SHARMA, Dual Degree Course, Chemical Engineering

Circa 2004:

A sudden thought strikes me, let us swear eternal friendship.
- George Canning

He was the only son in his family, the cynosure of Mumma's eyes, the object of affection for his sisters, Dad's obedient son. He had been a bully, once, in school but destiny combined with timely diligence had guided him to these hallowed portals of technology. He liked Rajasthan, missed home and probably missed his childhood the most. He was a normal guy, otherwise, who wore pleated trousers and anointed his curly hair with excess oil lest he might meet the tonsorial fate of his ascendants.
He, who was the master of his own will, testy at times and calm at others. He didn't burn away the midnight oil studying. He just enjoyed his friendships.

Circa 2009:

A generous friendship no cold medium knows
Burns with one love, with one resentment glows;
One should our interests and our passions be,
My friend must hate the man that injures me.
- Alexander Pope

He has grown into a great friend, stopping at nothing for a friend and expecting the same for himself. He would write your lab report, draw your diagrams, edit your resume' and listen to whatever friendship entails yet within a few hours, he would opt out of a plan that the other five are really perked up about and shall lock himself in a room only to emerge out as if nothing had happened at all.
He displayed insouciance interspersed with momentary displays of brilliance and diligence. He ran into some seven pointers before he smashed a handsome eight pointer. A night of toiling away won him the GE Industrial Design Contest.
Toiling "hard" at Tata-Steel with a GRE 1400+ under his belt, he is weighing his options before he strikes the final blow. And did I mention that we, his privileged friends, have discovered the reason behind his scratchy behaviour? He suffers from "PERIODS" and when he is down, it flows. Sorry it shows!!!

MANAV SEHGAL, BTech(H), Electronics and Communications Engineering

Circa 2004:

He cannot drink five bottles, bilk the score,
Then kill a constable, and drink five more;
But he can draw a pattern, make a tart,
And has ladies' etiquette by heart.
- William Cowper

He was the dude from Delhi. He always shall be. But then many a dudes have fallen for this phenomenon called the IITs and even more have fallen for the crushing phenomenon called love.
So he toiled hard, ate little, didn't shave his moustache and entered the hallow portals of IIT-Kharagpur; He was to be the "chocolate boy" with qualities thereof innate in him. He walked a graceful gait, "Cat walk" it was to be called; took hours dressing up but it was usually worth it :P. Some girls did fall for him after all.

Life.. continued...

Himanshu, I loved your post. We know why we six happen to be the best buddies. Even i have found changes so difficult..But with time, we all learn to accept it. As I have realised, acceptance of changes perhaps make us more pragmatic. Some changes are necessary, some changes wither us...Changes...life needs change...

I studied in DAV Durgapur, one of two best schools in Durgapur at that time... but my parents wanted me to join the other one when I was in class 1. I refused, I loved my school, I could never imagine leaving my school, it was mine...I knew so early in my life, that I hate changes... I loved my Lali madam, she gave me five stars.. I did not want to change school...I loved the class rooms, my small green chair, the monthly picnics, where I loved eating Lali miss' alooo dum.... My dad gave me a box of five stars, but I din go...

Changes...I hated my section being changed so often, every two years we were shuffled...I asked my teacher once.. why? Mandira madam told me, " Dear, you need to mix with everybody, make friends..thats why." I was so not convinced. I wanted to play cricket with those friends, they made me their captain.. In the new section, I wasnt, another guy played better than me...
Small and insignificant things now, but than, when I read those yellowed pages of my memory, I smile....

Changes... many friends changed school and went away, their priorities changed, they changed..perhaps I changed too... My best friends went away to another school, I was almost alone in my own school. Some of my very special teachers left, there were unwanted changes in the school administration. I was picked and dropped in a crowd unawares, where everybody were running with a goal. Some for engineering, some for medical, some for both. I have always been lucky to have found a friendly group, and in my senior secondary too, we were a bunch of guys sharing the same aspirations. Life was not so happy-go-lucky, but I used to have fun. Post plus two we all got scattered all over the country like seeds of a poppy flower, and life presented a major change. Now, I realised I need to go away from my home. All the excitement of getting through IIT JEE vanished like camphor... How am I supposed to live alone, how will I survive without my mom's delicacies. What about my playing with my brother. What abouut my dad whispering in my ear, " Piku, slow down, this is a bike, not a airplane..."

M.S. Hall of residence became a prison for me for the first few weeks. I hated the change. But then, I started enjoying the independence. I could sleep all day, I could miss classes, I can stay out upto whatever time at night... I made a few friends. Manav, Aamir, Prerit, Vishal. Then came Azad Khoj, when we six guys formed a team and enjoyed the freshers' event. It was so much fun. Manav's birthday treat , our first group treat at Billoo's, our first time proper GPL event..[:D] I became a master in this, and I loved the reputation of doing great in kicking ass.. But then, when you become famous, you have grudges against you...I remember this gpl session in my birthday 2006, when you ppl had an adrenaline burst and gpld me on the main road. I remember people stopping and enquiring whats happening. And a taxi driver joking to dump my body in his car to be thrown away somewhere... It was fun..

It has been a rocking time for all of us, the bhaat sessions at Golchakkar, the kolkata treat, the truth-telling cerimonies after pegs of alcohol, the ragging sessions of Nishant, the long phone calls of Manav, Prerit and Nishu..., Himanshu's peculiar behaviours.. my sentimental stories boring you guys, Prerits funda sessions, Deb and my chatting creating panic...

But then.. again a change is going to happpen... The begining of another end has already started. I dont want this April 2008 to come... I dont love this place, this place sucks, but I have lived my college life the way I wanted... perhaps a girlfriend would have made it better, but theres a big perhaps... We have enjoyed these 3/3.5 years and now, we have to move on again to live our own life... Imagining this makes me sad, and I know how it will feel. Now, I am alone in kgp, while you all are back home.. and kgp is hell these days...

But then, changes are bound to take place, and I know, we will do great wherever we land, and we will remain friends. We will keep Rocking...

Life..

"Well, If you really want to live happily, start accepting changes"

Life, the topic I wonder the most about. Its one of the things I observe very closely. I feel that accepting changes, that life brings along with it, is one of the important things to live a happy life.

Life always keeps on changing. Sometimes people change their home, their schools and sometimes even their friends. And this is one of the moments when u want "time to stop", as i mentioned earlier in my previous blog.

I am lucky enough..i had a great childhood. Life used to be just too easy and exciting. Every day was like another chapter. Full of wonder and surprises. I had a great friend circle in my first school. And we did all sorts of mischievous activities one can imagine.But then, I moved on to another school in my 9th class. I still remember, many of my friends didn't talk to me on my last day in that school, as i was moving to another school very shortly. I know, they were too upset. It was hard for them as well as for myself to accept the fact that we guys won't be studying together anymore. We guys won't be bunking classes together, won't be passing chits in the exams together, won't be playing football in the interval, together. It wasn't that they didn't do all those things after I went to another school. But I know, I was an important part of their life and so they were mine.

Changing the school wasn't an easy decision for me either. Had u asked me for a wish, I'ud have asked to study in my previous school. But some changes are required. And you have to accept them. Willingly or Unwillingly.And so I accepted, willingly.
I used to have a puppy when i was a kid. We used to play a lot together. I was some 12 yrs old that time. Sometimes he used to wake me up in the morning by jumping over me several times, hehe..And then we used to go together for the morning walk...But One day,i found him sick. We went to the doctor and found that he was actually very sick. Soon he died. I was really broken. He wasn't just a dog. He was my friend as well. This time the change wasn't acceptable..But I did accept, sooner or later. I had too....I don't miss him anymore. But I do laugh when some of his mischiefs occasionally come to my mind.
In my new school, I didn't make many friends like I did in my previous school. I made friends, but selected..very few. It wasn't that I was sad or something because of my school changing. Well, I wasn't the same boy anymore. I had changed, for the outer world atleast. But yes, in my new school as well, I did find good friends. Infact, very good friends. We studied four years together, till class 12th. And then, we guys moved ahead to our respective roads. Life was about to bring another change.

And then I came to the iit kgp, the place people desire to study. Life wasn't the same anymore. Atleast for the first few days. Staying away from the home wasn't something I imagined at all. But, yet again, i had to accept the change.
Soon, I learnt that taking caring of myself wasn't an easy task, which my mom had been doing very well at home ,since my childhood. Here, Ii was alone in an unknown crowd on my own, with a very little experience to deal with it. But soon, the crowd wasn't unknown any more. I made new friends. Infact some of my best friends. And we have been together since last 3 years. And I know, life is about to bring another change very soon. This is the begining of another end, I suppose...

Although I have written so much to convince you that changes are required and must be accepted. Still I can't convince myself on this. Perhaps, I am writing this because of that. But I' m sure..sooner or later..I'll learn to accept the changes that life brings along..willingly or unwillingly.

GolChakkar... the start of our journey...

Six strange guys...With dreams in their eyes...They met by chance...
